Germany's public universities are famous for (almost) no tuition. So why would anyone pay for a private one? Because the honest answer is: it depends on your profile, subject and timeline — not on prestige alone.
Public universities
- Tuition mostly free; semester contribution ~€100–400. Exception: Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students €1,500/semester (as of 2026).
- Strong reputation, huge subject range — but: limited seats (NC), German often required, uni-assist processing, and start dates you cannot influence.
- Competition from the whole world for popular English-taught master's programs.
Private universities
- Tuition typically €5,000–20,000/year — the real cost of the route.
- More English-taught bachelor programs, several intakes per year, faster admission decisions, smaller classes, career services.
- Quality varies: state recognition and program accreditation are the non-negotiable checkpoints. A recognised private degree is a full German degree.

- English-only profile, urgent start, or a specific applied program → a recognised private university can be the faster, safer route.
