The national visa for studying (§ 16b AufenthG) is a paper exercise with high stakes: the same file that one applicant fails with, another passes — because completeness and consistency decide.
The core file
- Admission or conditional admission letter (or Studienkolleg admission).
- Financing proof — usually the blocked account (see our blocked-account guide).
- Health insurance for the entry period.
- School/degree certificates with translations and attestations; APS where required.
- Motivation and CV that match your study choice — the interview follows exactly these.
- Visa fee €75 (as of 2026); biometric photos to spec.
The interview
- Expect questions on: why Germany, why this program, how it fits your past education, how you finance yourself, plans after graduation.
- Consistency beats eloquence: your answers must match your file.
- We run a preparation session before the appointment — the questions rarely surprise anyone who is prepared.
Timelines — the honest part
- Appointment waiting times vary wildly by country and season; processing after the interview commonly takes weeks to a few months.
- Nobody — including us — can guarantee an appointment, a duration, or an approval. Anyone who does is lying to you.
- What shortens the wait in practice: a complete file at the first attempt, and starting the process early.
