After Your Degree: From Student Visa to EU Blue Card in Germany

Germany lets graduates stay and work: the job-search permit after graduation, the EU Blue Card salary thresholds, and the realistic path to permanent residence.

After Your Degree: From Student Visa to EU Blue Card in Germany

A German degree is not just education — it is one of the strongest starting positions for a career in Europe. Unlike many countries, Germany actively wants international graduates to stay: the path from student visa to work permit to permanent residence is written into law. Here is how it works, step by step.

Step 1: The job-search permit after graduation

  • After completing a degree at a German university you can, under the applicable legal conditions, apply for a residence permit to look for a job (Section 20 of the Residence Act) — currently up to 18 months (as of 2026).
  • During this time you may work without restriction, which means you can take a bridging job while applying for positions in your field.
  • You apply at your local immigration office (Ausländerbehörde) before your student residence permit expires — never let it lapse.

Step 2: The EU Blue Card

  • The Blue Card is the main residence title for university graduates with a qualified job. You need a degree and a job offer matching your qualification above a minimum salary.
  • Guide values as of 2026: roughly €48,000 gross per year in general, and a lower threshold of roughly €44,000 for shortage occupations (IT, engineering, medicine, and others) and for recent graduates. The exact figures change every year — check the official Make it in Germany portal before applying.
  • Graduates of German universities are in the best position: employers know the degrees, no recognition procedure is needed, and the lower new-entrant threshold usually applies.

Step 3: Permanent residence

  • Blue Card holders can qualify for a settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis) after as little as 27 months of contributions — or 21 months with German at level B1 (as of 2026).
  • Time on a student residence permit counts partially toward some routes; your degree also shortens other permanent-residence tracks.
  • Family members receive residence permits with full work rights — a point parents often ask about.

What this means when choosing your studies

  • Pick a program with clear labour-market demand if staying in Germany is your goal — IT, engineering, health and business analytics lead the shortage lists.
  • Start learning German during your studies: B1 shortens your path to permanent residence and widens your job market dramatically.
  • Working-student jobs (Werkstudent) in your field are the single best door-opener to a post-graduation offer.

We advise students on this full path from the first conversation — because the right study choice today decides how smooth the Blue Card step is in four years. All rules described here are decided by the authorities and can change; we link the official sources below.
